Christ Himself revealed His divine identity. His words and actions were understood by His hearers as making a claim to divine authority.
When Jesus said, “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30), the Jews took up stones to stone Him. When they explained why, they said: “You, a man, are making yourself God” (John 10:33).
At His trial, the high priest asked Jesus whether He was the Christ, the Son of God. Jesus answered affirmatively, and the high priest accused Him of blasphemy (Matthew 26:63–66).
Jesus also declared:
“All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”
— Matthew 28:18
After His Resurrection, Christ gave His Apostles the authority to baptize “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19).
For Catholics, these passages are central to the faith that Jesus Christ is truly God and truly man, the eternal Son of the Father who came into the world for our salvation.
