About Christ The King
The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, commonly called the Feast of Christ the King, was established by Pope Pius XI in 1925 through the encyclical Quas Primas. The feast was instituted to remind the world that Jesus Christ is the true King whose authority surpasses every earthly power.
In the Gospels, Jesus teaches that His Kingdom is “not of this world” (John 18:36), yet His reign transforms hearts and calls all people to live in truth, justice, mercy, and love. As Christians, we proclaim Christ as our Lord and King and strive to build His Kingdom by living the Gospel each day.
The Church celebrates the Solemnity of Christ the King on the last Sunday of the liturgical year, immediately before the beginning of Advent. This feast reminds us that all history finds its fulfillment in Jesus Christ, the Alpha and the Omega, whose Kingdom will never end.
Why do we celebrate Christ the King?
The Feast of Christ the King, also called ‘Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe,’ is a festival celebrated in the Roman Catholic Church in honor of Jesus Christ as Lord over all creation. Essentially, it is a magnification of the Feast of the Ascension established by Pope Pius XI in 1925.
