Holy Thursday: The Gift of Love and the Beginning of the Passion

Holy Thursday, also known as Maundy Thursday, marks the beginning of the Sacred Triduum—the three holiest days of the Church’s year. On this night, we enter into the mystery of the Last Supper, where Jesus Christ gives Himself to us in love before His Passion.

It is a day filled with profound meaning: the institution of the Eucharist, the priesthood, and the commandment of love.

The Meaning of Holy Thursday

1. The Institution of the Eucharist

At the Last Supper, Jesus took bread and wine and transformed them into His Body and Blood, saying:

“This is my body which is given for you… Do this in remembrance of me.” (Luke 22:19)

In this moment, Christ gave the Church the greatest gift—the Holy Eucharist, where He remains truly present with us.

Every Mass is a continuation of this sacred mystery. What began on Holy Thursday continues until the end of time.

2. The Institution of the Priesthood

On this same night, Jesus entrusted the Apostles with the mission to continue His sacrifice:

“Do this in remembrance of me.”

Through these words, He established the priesthood, calling men to act in His person and to serve His people through the sacraments.

Holy Thursday is therefore also a day to pray for priests, that they may remain faithful to their sacred calling.

3. The Commandment of Love

Before the meal, Jesus performed a shocking act of humility—He washed the feet of His disciples. Even Peter the Apostleat first resisted, unable to understand why his Master would do such a thing.

Jesus then said:

“I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.” (John 13:15)

This is the meaning of “Maundy” (from mandatum, meaning “command”):
“Love one another as I have loved you.” (John 13:34)

What Catholics Do on Holy Thursday

The Mass of the Lord’s Supper

In the evening, Catholics gather for a special Mass that commemorates the Last Supper.

  • The Gloria is sung, and bells ring—then fall silent until Easter
  • The washing of the feet may take place, recalling Christ’s humility
  • The Eucharist is celebrated with great solemnity

Adoration at the Altar of Repose

After Mass, the Blessed Sacrament is carried in procession to a place of repose.

The faithful are invited to:

  • Stay in prayer
  • Keep watch with Christ
  • Reflect on His agony in the Garden of Gethsemane

“Could you not watch with me one hour?” (Matthew 26:40)

This is a deeply intimate moment—being with Jesus in His sorrow.

The Silence Begins

After Holy Thursday Mass:

  • The altar is stripped
  • Churches become quiet and solemn

This marks the beginning of the Passion

How We Should Prepare Ourselves

Holy Thursday is not just something we observe—it is something we enter into.

1. Examine Your Heart

Ask yourself:

  • Do I truly love others as Christ loves me?
  • Where do I need to grow in humility?

2. Go to Confession

Prepare your soul to receive the Eucharist worthily.
Holy Week is the perfect time to return to God’s mercy.

3. Spend Time in Prayer

Stay with Christ, especially during the evening.

Even a simple prayer from the heart:

“Lord, I am here with You.”

4. Practice Charity

Live the commandment of love:

  • Forgive someone
  • Help someone in need
  • Serve quietly, without seeking recognition

The Spiritual Message of Holy Thursday

Holy Thursday reveals the heart of Christ:

  • A love that gives itself completely
  • A God who becomes our food
  • A King who kneels to serve

It invites us to do the same.

Conclusion

On Holy Thursday, Jesus Christ gives us everything: His Body, His priesthood, and His commandment of love.

As we enter into the night of His Passion, we are invited not to be distant observers—but faithful companions.

Let us stay with Him. Let us love as He loves.

Prayer for Holy Thursday

Lord Jesus,
on the night before You died,
You gave us the gift of the Eucharist
and showed us the path of humble love.

Teach me to receive You with faith,
to serve others with humility,
and to remain with You in Your suffering.

May I never abandon You,
but walk with You faithfully
from the Last Supper to the Cross.
Amen.
