About St. Columba
St. Columba (521–597), also known as Colum Cille (“Dove of the Church”), was born into a noble Irish family. After becoming a monk, he founded several monasteries throughout Ireland before leaving his homeland as a missionary.
In 563, St. Columba established the famous monastery on the island of Iona, off the western coast of Scotland. From this small island, he and his fellow monks evangelized much of Scotland and northern Britain, preaching the Gospel and helping to strengthen the Catholic faith.
St. Columba was known for his love of prayer, fasting, Sacred Scripture, and charity. His monasteries became centers of learning, worship, and missionary activity, preserving Christian faith and culture during a turbulent period in history.
He died peacefully on June 9, 597, after spending his life in faithful service to Christ.
