About Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton
Born in 1774 in New York City into an Anglican family, Elizabeth Ann Bayley married and raised five children. After her husband’s death and a journey to Rome, she embraced the Catholic faith in 1805—becoming the first native‑born American to be canonized. In 1809, she founded the Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph’s, America’s first community of religious sisters, and opened the nation’s first free Catholic school for girls in Baltimore. Through prayer, teaching, and compassionate service to orphans and the poor, St. Elizabeth’s pioneering work laid the foundation for the Catholic parochial school system in the United States. She died in 1821, revered for her faith, charity, and trust in Divine Providence.
