What was Saint John Bosco known for?
St. John Bosco (1815–1888), lovingly called Don Bosco, was an Italian priest who devoted his life to the education and welfare of poor and at‑risk boys in 19th‑century Turin. Guided by a vision of Christ and Mary, he founded the Society of St. Francis de Sales (the Salesians) to continue his work in schools, workshops, and oratories.
Known for his gentle kindness, practical wisdom, and “preventive system” of education—based on reason, religion, and loving kindness—Don Bosco taught his students to trust in God’s providence. He also encouraged devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and the rosary. Through his zeal for youth, compassion for the marginalized, and faith in God’s boundless mercy, St. John Bosco’s legacy endures worldwide in thousands of Salesian schools and parishes.
