About St. Lawrence
St. Lawrence was one of the seven deacons of Rome who served the Church during the third century under Pope Sixtus II. As a deacon, he cared for the Church’s treasures and faithfully served the poor and those in need.
When the Roman authorities demanded that Lawrence surrender the Church’s riches, he gathered the poor, widows, orphans, and the sick, presenting them as the true treasures of the Church. For his courageous witness to Christ, he was arrested and suffered martyrdom around the year 258 AD during the persecution of Emperor Valerian.
St. Lawrence is honored as the patron saint of deacons, cooks, chefs, librarians, the poor, and those who work in charitable service. His feast day is celebrated on August 10, and his joyful faith and fearless witness continue to inspire Christians throughout the world.
