What is St. Roch known for?
St. Roch was born in the 14th century in Montpellier, France, to a wealthy and devout family. From a young age, he showed deep love for prayer, fasting, and helping the poor. After the death of his parents, he gave away all his possessions and set out on a pilgrimage to Rome.
During his journey, a terrible plague broke out in Italy. St. Roch devoted himself to caring for the sick, miraculously healing many by making the Sign of the Cross. Eventually, he too contracted the plague and withdrew to the forest to die. According to tradition, a dog brought him bread daily and licked his wounds, which began to heal. This is why St. Roch is often pictured with a dog by his side.
He later returned home, unrecognized, and was wrongly imprisoned. He died in obscurity, but his identity and sanctity were revealed after his death. Devotion to St. Roch quickly spread across Europe, especially during times of plague and disease.
He is a powerful intercessor in times of illness and suffering, reminding us of the Christian call to charity, humility, and trust in God’s mercy.
