What St. Kateri Tekakwitha known for?
Born in 1656 in what is now upstate New York, Kateri Tekakwitha was the daughter of a Mohawk chief and an Algonquin Christian mother. Orphaned by a smallpox epidemic that scarred her face and left her visually impaired, she was raised in the traditional ways of her people. At age 19, she embraced the Catholic faith taught by Jesuit missionaries and was baptized “Kateri” (Catherine).
Despite facing opposition and isolation—even from her own family—Kateri resolved to live a life of prayer, chastity, and service. She spent hours in adoration, cared tenderly for the elderly and sick, and practiced rigorous penances. In just four years of Christian life, her holiness drew many to Christ. She died at 24, offering her sufferings for the conversion of her people.
Canonized in 2012, St. Kateri remains a powerful example of courage, purity, and love for creation. Her nickname, the “Lily of the Mohawks,” reflects her spotless devotion to God amid hardship.
